One hot and stormy summer, Purdey, 17, and her brother Makenzy, 15, are left to their own devices in the dilapidated family home near a tourist lake.
Purdey works as a cleaner in a hotel complex, while Makenzy earns some money by robbing tourists. On this bittersweet journey, between the recklessness of adolescence and the harshness of adult life, they depend on each other during what seems to be the last summer of their youth.

As for the challenge of working on that tight budget Sermon-Daï decided that the only attitude to take was to regard it not as a constraint but as an asset. The prize from the jury would seem to indicate her instincts (yet again) were bang on target.

Il pleut dans la maison is a confident debut by Sermon-Daï, whose craft and care for the subject should propel her to further interesting projects. It is too soon to state the Dardennes have a worthy Wallonian successor, but Il pleut dans la maison is a promising start.

Combining a familiar ‘last summer’ coming-of-age story with a non-fiction sensibility to arresting affect, the filmmaker’s intimate visual style effectively draws the viewer into the sealed-off world of the troubled protagonists of this Cannes Critics Week title.

Is there a maximum height of the sky where we are stuck? This question, asked with the naivety of his 15 years by Donovan, Makenzy’s best friend, echoes long after leaving the screening of Paloma Sermon-Daï’s first feature film…

The film isn’t about being poor, poverty is the backdrop of the film. What comes out is above all the relationship between sister and brother, that glass ceiling, which I’ve experienced and which is so hard to break.

“Sermon-Daï delves once again into a territory she knows deeply well, capturing a fresh journey of adolescence. While Paloma’s intimate storytelling never shies away from the harshness of reality, her gentle gaze stubbornly refuses to give in to misery.”
